How does the ASCII art generator work?

The tool renders your text onto a hidden HTML canvas at high resolution, reads the pixel brightness data, and maps each sampled pixel to an ASCII character from the chosen character set — dark pixels become dense characters, light pixels become spaces.

Why is there a 20-character limit on the text input?

Longer strings shrink individual letters so much that detail is lost in the ASCII output. For best readability, 5–15 characters works well. The limit keeps the result legible at practical output widths.

Which character set should I use?

Dense (`.:-=+*#%@`) gives high contrast and fine detail. Minimal (`.oO0@`) produces a bold, simple look. Blocks (`░▒▓█`) creates a chunky, retro style. Use Custom to supply your own ramp ordered from lightest to darkest.

What does the Invert toggle do?

It swaps how brightness is mapped to characters. Normally dark text on a white canvas maps dark areas to dense characters. Inverting makes the text appear as open space against a dense background — useful for dark-themed displays.

Can I convert an image to ASCII art?

Yes. Switch to the Image tab, upload any image file, and the same Canvas-based algorithm samples the image pixels and converts them to ASCII characters.

Does this tool send my image or text to a server?

No. All processing happens locally in your browser using the Canvas API. Nothing is uploaded or stored anywhere.

How do I save the ASCII art?

Click the Download .txt button to save a plain-text file you can open in any text editor. For best fidelity, view it in a monospace font such as Courier New or Consolas.

Why does the art look different in different editors?

ASCII art is designed for monospace fonts. If you paste it into a proportional-font editor (like a word processor), character widths vary and the image distorts. Always use a monospace font when displaying the result.
