What Is Rashi in Vedic Astrology? The 12 Moon Signs and Rashi vs Sun Sign

Find your Vedic moon sign (rashi) using your birth date, time, and place — and understand what each rashi means.

A rashi checker finds your Vedic moon sign (janma rashi) using your birth date, time, and place. Unlike Western astrology which uses sun signs, Vedic astrology emphasizes the moon's position at birth — believed to govern emotions, mind, and life patterns.

This guide covers the 12 rashis, what each means, and how to interpret the result.

What Is Rashi?

Rashi (Sanskrit: राशि) is the zodiac sign in which the Moon was placed at the time of your birth. There are 12 rashis, each spanning 30° of the zodiac.

Vedic astrology considers janma rashi (moon sign) more important than the sun sign for daily horoscopes (rashifal), naming children, and matchmaking. Most Indian newspaper horoscopes are based on rashi, not sun sign.

Rashi vs. Sun Sign — Why Different?

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac (fixed to seasons). Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac (fixed to actual constellations). Due to precession of the equinoxes, these differ by about 23 degrees today.

Practical effect: your Vedic rashi is often one sign behind your Western sun sign. Someone born in early April with a Western Aries sun sign may be a Vedic Meen (Pisces) by moon.

Why Time & Place Matter

The Moon moves through one rashi in about 2.25 days. To accurately determine your janma rashi:

  • Birth date — Required.
  • Birth time — Crucial. Without exact time, the moon may be in the previous or next rashi.
  • Birth place — Determines local sidereal time, which affects rashi calculation.

If you don't know your birth time, the result may be off by one rashi. A janma kundli requires exact time to be reliable.

How Rashifal (Daily Horoscope) Works

Daily, weekly, and monthly horoscopes (rashifal) are typically based on the moon's current position relative to your janma rashi:

  • Moon in your rashi — emotional sensitivity high.
  • Moon in 4th from rashi — peaceful, family-focused day.
  • Moon in 8th from rashi — challenging, careful with decisions.
  • Moon in 12th from rashi — restful, end-cycle energy.

Combined with planetary transits and dasha (planetary periods), these give a fuller picture.
