Preeti to Unicode converter translates Nepali text written in the legacy Preeti font into modern Unicode Devanagari — making decades of old documents, government files, and printed materials usable on the modern internet.

This guide explains why Preeti exists, why it's deprecated, how the conversion works, and the practical steps to convert old Word documents, PDFs, and printed text into Unicode.

What Is Preeti and Why Was It Used?

Before Unicode was widely supported (pre-2005), Nepali text on computers used custom fonts like Preeti that mapped English keyboard letters to Devanagari shapes — but only the visual shapes, not the actual character codes.

How Preeti Worked

You'd type "g" with Preeti font installed, and it displayed as "ग". But the actual stored text was just the letter "g" — only the font made it look Nepali. Without Preeti font, the text looked like English gibberish.

Why It's Deprecated

  • Doesn't work on phones, web browsers, or any system without Preeti installed
  • Cannot be searched by Google or any search engine
  • Text becomes meaningless when font is missing
  • Government of Nepal officially transitioned to Unicode in 2015
  • All modern apps use Unicode

How Conversion Works

The converter maps each Preeti character to its Unicode Devanagari equivalent based on a fixed lookup table.

Example Mapping

Preeti KeyUnicode Output
g

kfका
g]गे
Why It's Not Reversible Perfectly

Some Preeti characters had multiple visual variants. Conversion to Unicode is one-way — you can't reverse Unicode back to identical Preeti without ambiguity.

Common Conversion Scenarios

  • Old government documents — Nepal government files written 2000-2015 are mostly Preeti
  • Newspaper archives — older Nepali newspaper digital archives
  • Word documents — .doc files from older systems
  • School/college study materials — printed in Preeti format
  • Academic theses — Nepali language theses pre-2015
  • Migration to modern websites — converting old content for new sites

Converting Word and PDF Files

From Word (.doc/.docx)

  1. Open the document in Word
  2. Select all Preeti text (Ctrl+A)
  3. Copy and paste into the Preeti to Unicode tool
  4. Copy converted Unicode text
  5. Paste back into Word, change font to "Mangal" or "Kalimati" (Unicode-compatible)

From PDF

  1. If PDF has selectable text: copy from PDF, paste into converter
  2. If scanned/image PDF: use OCR first (Google Drive OCR works for printed Devanagari)
  3. Then paste OCR output into the Preeti converter (if it was originally Preeti) or already get Unicode (if it was modern Devanagari)

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Nepali text look like English letters?+

Almost certainly written in Preeti font. The text is stored as English letters but displayed as Devanagari only when Preeti font is installed. Convert to Unicode for universal display.

Is conversion 100% accurate?+

Very high accuracy for standard Preeti text. Some special characters or non-standard variants may need minor manual fixes.

Can I convert Unicode back to Preeti?+

Yes, with a Unicode-to-Preeti tool. But there's no reason to — Preeti is deprecated and Unicode is universal.

Does the converter work for Hindi too?+

No. Preeti is Nepali-specific. Hindi has its own legacy fonts (Krutidev, etc.) that need different converters.

Will converting affect formatting (bold, italic)?+

Plain text only. Formatting is preserved if you copy Unicode result back into Word and apply formatting separately.

Is the tool free?+

Yes, completely free. Runs in browser, no signup required.
