How vehicle tax is calculated in Nepal — engine capacity, vehicle type, age-based slabs, and province-wise variations.

6 min readUpdated April 24, 2026Nepal, Tax, Vehicle, Finance

Every vehicle in Nepal — bike, scooter, car, jeep, truck — pays annual vehicle tax based on engine capacity and vehicle type. Rates differ by province (since federalism in 2017) and vehicle age. Missing renewal triggers fines and even vehicle seizure.

This guide explains Nepal's vehicle tax structure, common engine-CC slabs, province-specific differences, and what documents you need for annual renewal.

Nepal Vehicle Tax Structure

Electric Vehicles (EV) Tax

Nepal heavily incentivizes EVs:

  • Four-wheeler EVs: NPR 12,000-25,000 annually

Renewal Documents

  • Original blue book (RC)
  • Valid PUC (pollution) certificate
  • Valid insurance
  • Citizenship copy
  • Tax payment receipt
Don't Miss Annual Renewal

Vehicles unrenewed for over 1 year are blacklisted; they cannot be sold, transferred, or driven legally. Renewing requires paying back-taxes plus penalties.

Province-Wise Variations

Tax rates differ slightly between provinces. Generally:

  • Bagmati (Kathmandu) — highest rates
  • Gandaki, Lumbini — moderate
  • Karnali, Sudurpaschim — lowest (incentivize remote provinces)

The province where you registered matters, not where you currently drive.
