What is the difference between XPath and JSONPath?

How do filter expressions work?

What does the .. operator do?

The .. operator performs a recursive descent — it searches for the specified key at any depth in the JSON structure. For example, $..price finds all "price" values no matter how deeply nested they are.

How do array slices work?

Array slices follow Python slice syntax: [start:end]. For example [0:3] returns elements at index 0, 1, and 2. Omitting start defaults to 0 and omitting end defaults to the array length. Negative indices count from the end, so [-1:] returns the last element.

Can I use this to test JSONPath for jq, Kubernetes, or AWS?

Yes, with caveats. This tool implements the core JSONPath specification. jq has its own extended syntax. Kubernetes uses a subset of JSONPath. AWS Step Functions and SSM also use a JSONPath subset. The fundamental expressions (dot notation, wildcards, filters) are compatible across all of them.
