EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is metadata embedded in image files by cameras and smartphones. It includes camera make/model, capture settings, date/time, and sometimes GPS location.

What image formats support EXIF?

EXIF is most commonly found in JPG/JPEG and TIFF files. HEIC files (iPhone photos) also carry rich EXIF data. PNG files rarely contain EXIF, but the tool will still attempt extraction.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. All EXIF extraction is done entirely in your browser using the exifr library. Your photo never leaves your device.

Why does my image show no EXIF data?

Social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter/X, WhatsApp) strip EXIF metadata before saving or sharing images. Screenshots also contain no EXIF. Use original files direct from your camera or phone.

Can I see where a photo was taken?

If the photo contains GPS coordinates (many smartphones embed these by default), the GPS section will display the latitude/longitude and a Google Maps link.

What does the Download JSON button do?

It exports all extracted EXIF data as a formatted JSON file, which you can open in any text editor or use for further processing.

What is the Orientation field?

Orientation indicates how the camera was held when the photo was taken (e.g., landscape, portrait, upside-down). Values range from 1–8 per the EXIF specification.

What is FNumber (aperture)?

FNumber is the lens aperture (f-stop) used when the photo was taken, e.g., f/1.8 or f/8. Lower values mean wider aperture and more background blur (bokeh).

Can I use this tool to check if a photo has been edited?

The Software field in Camera Info shows which software last processed the image. Some editing tools update the DateTime field. However, EXIF alone is not a reliable forgery detection method.
